Title: The High Kings on PBS
Post by: Conchobar on January 30, 2008, 09:00PM
I have just contacted my local pbs station here in Minnesota, and the others that I know of to see when and if they will be airing the special. If anyone would like me to contact their local stations as well or know of air times please contact me and I will start a list posting all of them as I get confirmed information.

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks for the info and support. I'll do my best to do you proud.
As far as a double bill of CW and THK, I'd be first in line for ticket to that.

I emailed KCPT and they said they didn't have plans to show them right now.

Hey Bob, did you ever hear back from the MN PBS stations?

Sorry, Yeah I did hear back from them. They said they have no plans to air it at this time, but passed on my interest to the programming department. I'm still waiting for responses from several other channels. I'll try to find some more stations this week, and back up my messages to the others.

Thats funny Bob, thats the same response I got back.

I figure the good thing about that is the word is getting out. So if they keep getting asked about it they may decide to run it.

But once again, please remember  “. . . . since March is a pledge month our program can be subject to last minute changes. It is recommend that you check our online schedule ... the day of to make sure no changes have been made.”  ;D

Right you are Maggie. The same bird mentioned that to me as well. They will be performing in the WMFE studio on March 8th. I'm waiting to hear back from them but I'm assuming that it will be carried live on their radio station as well so here is the link for that.

This just in.....

The High Kings on GPB (Georgia Public Broadcasting), Thursday, March 13 at 8pm ;D

They write...
Four top-class perfomers create this unique ensemble, re-energizing great Irish ballads and introducing exciting new songs from Ireland.....

Highly Acclaimed composer and musical director David Downes(Celtic Woman) brings the intricate harmonies and driving rhythms to THE HIGH KINGS songbook, giving it a freshness and sparkle that is modern and exciting without sacrificing the traditional melodies and lyrics.

Does anyone know when and if it will be showing in Texas? Anywhere? I haven't been able to figure out with my local PBS station...my family doesn't watch TV, my dad took the antenna off, we just rig up a makeshift antenna when something like the Olympics is on. So I'm a bit confuzzled and don't know how to figure this stuff out!

I'm hoping they put it on their website since I will be seeing a different show on that date. ;)

Title: Re: The High Kings on PBS
Post by: Maggie on February 21, 2008, 04:40AM
I have been asked by our IACS to help with.....guess what?

Here's part of the message from WMFE:

"On the evening of March 8, 2008, the High Kings from Ireland will be in our studio to help us with our pledge drive as well as promote their show in Orlando on May 8.
We would love to have members from the Irish American Cultural Society of Central Florida as volunteers answering the phones."

So of course I said "Hang on, I'll check my diary......" :D :D :D

Hmmmm...wonder if the Forum members need to do a call in campaign to some of these PBS's that are not airing them. Unless the HK are not going to doing any LIVE shows in those areas, that also could be a possiblity. :)

It couldn't do any harm, Mel.

At least it would make them aware of what they're missing.....then maybe next time.

The best that could happen is, the High Kings add dates to their Tour!

At our Irish Club Meeting a couple of weeks ago, when the President asked "any other business?"
I raised my hand and went up to speak. I had printed out info from THK website.

I told them about the guys and the Tour, and to watch out for the PBS show.

When I finished, one of the Board said "and what about Cherish the Ladies?
They're coming too".
I said "Yes, and one of them is Martin Furey's sister, but THIS is about The High Kings".

Then, when we got a request from WMFE for eight members to help with the phone bank, they suddenly got interested! ;D ;D ;D

I just did a search on Houston's PBS to see when I could see The High Kings concert and boy did I get a treat.  Celtic Thunder is airing on Sunday March 2nd and The High Kings is airing on Monday March 3rd.  Does it get any better than that?  I'm been previewing them on You Tube and I like them both.

Hey Zee - join your local Irish Club, volunteer to man the phones.....
you will get your meet and greet! :D
I will be on the phones in Orlando with 7 other members of the IACS on Saturday March 8th.

We know from past experience that many mischievous kids / drunks / junkies call in to the number on the screen and say outrageous things......you will not be able to tell by our faces....we will smile sweetly, say "thank you for calling" and hang up!

There is only one problem with me manning the phones in Connecticut - I live in Pennsylvania!! ;D ;D
I get their magazine because I pledged for the Wallingford Concert on March 22nd. However, if they want to set up a remote studio I'll help out!!

I would LOVE to hear you get a mischievous person on the phone....off the air! I will bet that would be the last time they called! ;) ;)

The Spring Festival has started in Oklahoma, too. The High Kings show will air twice on Tuesday night, and Celtic Thunder will air twice on Thursday night. Andre Rieu is on now.

Do you think PBS might be trying to repeat the success of Celtic Woman?

I sincerely hope so!

I'll be seeing them live tomorrow at WMFE Studios, when eight of us from the IACS
will be taking phone pledges.
I have my DVD and CD ready for them to sign.

Dave will be recording it.
We will also record "Visions of Ireland" and "Historic Pubs of Dublin".

Do say hello to the lads...High Kings... for us Maggie!

Oh you can count on me to give them a hug from you all! :D
I think I will print some of the nice comments about them from the Forum, in case they haven't seen them.

Here is our local schedule for Historic Pubs:

Historic Pubs of Dublin
March 8 - 5 p.m. on WMFE-TV
March 16 - 9 a.m. , 3:30 p.m. on WMFE-Encore
March 18 - 2 p.m. on WMFE-Encore
March 20 - 3:30 p.m. on WMFE-Encore
Historic Pubs of Dublin takes viewers on an exciting and visually stunning tour of Dublin’s most notable historic pubs, as well as the many places of interest that surround them.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) serves as tour guide, providing valuable insight into Irish culture and history — and the significance the Irish pub plays in both areas. This program teaches future travelers how to make the most of their visit to Dublin.

As usual, I have a little personal story.....When I was in my early teens, (and that wasn't yesterday!) all of my family was in Dublin, on our way back to England from Tipperary.
We stayed overnight, and this was the first time I had stayed in Dublin City on a Saturday night.
I loved it....it was noisy, bustling and exciting.
I was with my parents, my two brothers and my sister-in-law Norah.
My Dad took us into a historic pub near O'Connell Street.
The tables and chairs were barrels of various sizes, there was sawdust on the floor, an enormous oak bar, and huge engraved mirrors reflecting flickering lights.
Several men sat in a corner, with fiddles, flutes, an accordion, a bodhrán. One of them was singing a lament. It was wonderful!
I sat there quietly with my lemonade and crisps (potato chips). My Dad was trying to get my brothers to sing, when our attention was drawn to a man speaking in a loud voice, leaning on the bar. We thought he was just a local drunk. But something in his voice demanded attention.......he spoke in Irish and English, and we realized it was poetry........I remember thinking his voice was wonderful, rich and full of emotion. The man was the legendary playwright, author, IRA member and alcoholic.....Brendan Behan.
The Behans were passionately Republican, Brendan's mother Kathleen was a personal friend of Michael Collins, and his Uncle Peadar Kearney wrote the Irish National Anthem Amhrán Na BhFiann.
I would not be surprised to hear Brendan's name mentioned during the "Historic Pubs of Dublin", in fact I will be more surprised if they do NOT mention it!

There are too many stories about the Behans to tell, you will just have to look them up.
I feel very fortunate to have listened to the man himself.
You will have heard some of his songs, including "The Patriot Game", and "The Auld Triangle" from his play "The Quare Fellow" written while in Mountjoy Jail, Dublin and now performed very well by the High Kings.
Here is Brendan Behan with his friend Jackie Gleason:

Do we get details Maggie?

Yes OK, but I was very tired when i got home last night.

I was fortunate indeed to spend over two hours in the company of the High Kings at the studios of WMFE in Orlando.

They arrived just before transmission time of 8pm, and needed no rehearsal.
They launched straight into singing a capella in perfect harmony.
Darren looked over, saw my name badge and said "Maggie - you're famous!"
He had been reading the Forum, and also I had e-mailed them previously.

They came over to us on the phone bank (eight members of the Irish American Cultural Society) and shook hands with everyone, introducing themselves.

We took several breaks in which we had chance to chat with them, and they kindly signed my CD and DVD.
There was coffee, soda and little chocolate cakes with green icing (yuk!)
Not a Guinness in sight...... :(
We discussed how thrilled everyone was to hear of Lisa and Scott's new baby, how they are looking forward to opening for CW at Radio City, and the world in general.
I invited them for a jar, but they were in need of some rest before continuing their travels.

Nicer guys you could not wish to meet!

Extremely talented singers and musicians of course, each with a rich musical pedigree, but also charming, friendly and funny. Great rapport between the four of them.
They are every bit as talented and polished as Celtic Woman, and their music is likely to appeal to just as wide an audience.
In fact, in addition to increasing popularity here in the USA, they will probably have more success at home in Ireland and in Europe, given enough exposure.
They have the advantage of following in the huge footsteps of the Clancy Brothers and the Fureys, and although comparison is inevitable, they have a fresh new approach and exciting David Downes arrangements.
They deserve the best of success, and I hope you will all not only go see them, but spread the word, just as with Celtic Woman.

(Will that do, lads? I told ye I would put the word out, did I not?)  ;)

They were at WMFE Studio on Saturday from 8pm to 10pm, and did several interviews and songs.
They did some songs and chatting off camera too. Very sociable guys!

Dave recorded the whole 2 hours, and I appeared a couple of times in the background.
I don't know if they can be seen from the website:

Usually, if we record a PBS Show, we edit out the Begathon.
This time, because I was part of it, Dave recorded the whole thing! :D

The presenters mentioned the name of the Irish American Cultural Society a few times, and showed our banner, so we were glad of the exposure. However, we tried to get some of our younger members to come along and volunteer, but they were all "busy".
We were afraid the viewers would see all of us oldies and think "I'm not joining that bunch of old ***** (rhymes with arts)!  ;D ;D ;D

I think you mean Finbarr Clancy, Jim.

BTW I need to correct something I posted the other day, I said I have 2 CDs which Martin Furey recorded with his sister Aoife.......his sister's name is Aine Furey:

The only thing I don't like about this Bohinta CD is the cover, which is half Aine's face and half Martin's.....it's weird, and they could have come up with a better one, the music deserves it.
http://www.finbarfurey.com/bohinta.htm
Aine has a good CD of her own too:
http://www.celticcollections.com/product/Aine-Furey/CCCD_600

I got her confused with Aoife Clancy, who is Finbarr's sister:
http://www.aoifeclancy.com/

Both ladies are very talented.

You have to realize I've been listening to the Furey's and Clancy's music for 30 years, and it's easy to get confused when there is so much talent and musical heritage in those families.

A little late in reading all of this but I'm caught up now.

Wow, the guys sound really nice, although I'm not at all surprised. I can't wait to finally watch the DVD next Saturday (I'm holding out for the chat, lol). From what I heard in the arena before the CW concert, it's going to be gooooooooooooood.

And speaking of Finbarr Clancy, I actually have a third cousin named Finbarr. (My Dad's side of the family is VERY Irish, lol). Never met him though. Maybe he's a musician like this Finbarr, hehehe.   :D

Finbar (with one or rwo 'r's) is not an uncommon name in Ireland.

Finbarr Clancy was named after Finbar Furey, Martin's Dad....I guess they gave him an extra 'r' to be different! :D

The Clancy's and Furey's often played and toured together.

I will be sending out both snail mail today to each, as well as following up by email asking if they could Re-Air the Special to promote the Lads Tour.

Any one who is interested contact Timi or myself for the addresses.

Unfortunately, I missed this. I'm new here and don't know who the High Kings are. Are they like Celtic Thunder? I heard that Celtic Thunder was a spin-off band of Celtic Woman so maybe the High Kings are too. Also, what I would love is Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder together in an event called Celtic Storm. That would be nice. Be sure to tell we when this will be on in St. Louis. I hope to hear them sometime.

THK are the award winning Irish ballad group from the makers of Celtic Woman.  Their debut CD and DVD both went platinum, and they won the top new Irish music artists award from the Irish Music Association over nominees which included Celtic Thunder, Kill Krinkle Club, Coronas. Learn more about them here - http://www.thehighkings.com/ (http://www.thehighkings.com/).
