Ok, Sara I'm just getting tired of saying it. What a great page. I love the pics! I would say that you need to get a life, but you are way to handy as is. Thanks for sharing that.

Well, I think this might delight some of you American fans, but it is spoilt by the commentators who are totally ignorant. They talk through the "moment of silence" and the National Anthem. They ruin it, but you get to see Darren anyhow:

...and just to show he is not biased, he sings both the USA and Canadian Anthems..... although I think it's in the wrong key for him......pitched too high: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZqNIVx2giY&feature=related
Here's young Darren in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997: (don't hate me, Darren!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRi5FT_M1yk&feature=related
Here he is doing his "Billy Joel" thing from the show "Movin' Out" which he starred in on Broadway, and won a Tony award:

It's still Rock 'n Roll to me......

There are lots more video clips on YouTube.

Here's a pic of Darren (on the right) with Josh Groban and Billy Joel.
This was during the Broadway run of "Movin' Out" in which Darren played the lead.

All THK guys are multi-talented.
Darren was a silver medal step dancer when he was 13.
Finbarr and Brian play multiple instruments.
Martin Furey can play the uillean pipes as good as his famous father Finbar. His sister Áine is also a multi-talented singer / instrumentalist, his brother Robert is an actor. I saw Martin and Áine in concert together in London.
Many Irish children can play multiple instruments, sing, dance and/or recite poetry, but not many reach the standards these guys have.
Of course a lot of the credit goes to their families, it definitely helps if your home is filled with musically talented people, as in the homes of the Nesbitt, Gilsenan, Kelly, O'Mhaolchatha, Fallon, Agnew families and others who are part of Celtic Woman and The High Kings. I'm sure they all got tremendous support from parents and siblings, and their community.
Here's a quote from Martin's father, Finbar: "Strangely enough, I can't remember ever learning to play an instrument... As far back as I can remember, I could play music. There were always instruments in the house. When we were kids, we had no TV, so we had to make our own entertainment. We'd just pick up the instruments and start to play and sing."

So awesome that all these men have carried on their family traditions. I think the heritage (both musical and otherwise) is one of my favorite things about Ireland. I was overwhelmed by the sharing among generations during my first visit. I've made it a point to try to bring family traditions into my children's lives. I've no musical talent to pass on, but my goal in retirement is to learn to play something. Mairead tells me that over 50 is not too late to start!
